Altruism (27893) | Prof. Oren Harman

How can behavior that reduces fitness survive in evolution? Darwin himself asked the question, and ecologists, geneticists, economists and game theorists have been trying to crack the mystery ever since. In this course we will learn about this dramatic quest after the origins of altruism. From the battle between the anarchist prince Kropotkin and “Darwin’s bulldog” Huxley, through the achievements of architects of the modern evolutionary synthesis, the fathers (and sons) of game theory, ecology, and evolutionary psychology, we shall see the extent to which the conundrum of the biological origins of morality continues to vex and to excite today.
