Reading Darwin the 21st Century (27862) | Prof. Oren Harman

An advanced seminar in the history of biology, the course will proceed by reading Darwin closely on such concepts as “natural selection”, “heredity”, “variation”, “race”, “sex”, “adaptation”, “altruism”, “sexual selection”, “development”, and then looking at how, over the course of the last century and a half, our understanding of these concepts has changed. By juxtaposing the a-historical discussion of the changes in our understanding of such concepts over the last 150 years with the contextualized history of the period, we shall seek to examine the extent to which scientific thinking is influenced both by scientific developments in theory, observation, and experiment, and by political and social developments outside the realm of science.
