Passion, Imagination, and the Making of the Scientific Persona (27895) | Dr. Raz Chen

This seminar will examine the context of the writing of Descartes’ unique “Passions of the Soul” (1649), both philosophically and in terms of its political and social backdrop. We shall also be looking at the medical and psychological theories of the day, at the manner in which Descartes dealt with them in his treatise, and how this impacted upon the making of the scientific persona in the early modern period. Along side Descrates’ writing we will read neo-Stoic philosophers of the sixteenth century, the melancholy literature of the period, and Descartes’ correspondence with Princess Elizabeth.
